Borghesia is an influential electronic music and multimedia group from Slovenia, known for their provocative and avant-garde style. Formed in 1982 in Ljubljana, Borghesia emerged from the alternative club scene and quickly became one of the leading acts in the Yugoslavian and European electronic music landscape.
Borghesia was originally established by members of the alternative theatre group FV-112/15. The band’s music is characterized by its use of synthesizers, electronic beats, and socio-political themes, blending genres such as EBM (Electronic Body Music), industrial, and techno. Their lyrics often tackle issues of freedom, sexuality, and rebellion, making them a voice of dissent during a politically charged era in Yugoslavia.
The band’s early albums, such as “Ljubav je hladnija od smrti” (1985) and “No Hope, No Fear” (1987), are considered landmarks in the EBM genre. Their live performances, which often included multimedia elements like video projections and performance art, were groundbreaking and added a unique dimension to their music.
Borghesia’s impact extended beyond music as they influenced the broader cultural and artistic movements in Slovenia and across Europe. They were part of the “Neue Slowenische Kunst” (NSK) collective, which included other notable Slovenian artists and groups like Laibach.
After a hiatus in the 1990s, Borghesia made a comeback with new music and performances in the 21st century. Their recent works continue to explore complex themes with a modern sound, staying true to their experimental roots.
Borghesia remains a seminal band in the electronic music scene, continuing to inspire with their innovative approach and thought-provoking content.
